Benedict Cumberbatch is an internationally recognized actor (BBC Sherlock), who has a huge following of over 6 million followers on social media sites. He is also the voice of both Shere Khan in the reboot of The Jungle Book and Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange.

Benedict Cumberbatch was born on July 19, 1976 in London, England. He is the son of actress Wanda Ventham and actor Timothy Carlton. He grew up with his parents and two older sisters.

His Education

Benedict Cumberbatch’s first school was a special school called Brambletye School in East Grinstead, Sussex. Benedict Cumberbatch attended this school from 1986-1989 before he moved to Harrow School based in North West London where he remained until 1994.

In 1994 Benedict Cumberbatch enrolled at the University of Manchester to study drama for three years.

Benedict Cumberbatch went on to get a degree from the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts (LAMDA).

His Personal Life

Benedict Cumberbatch has always wanted to be an actor since he was a little boy. He worked extremely hard to meet his dreams and this gave him the opportunity to win roles in many films, television, and theater roles.

In 2004 when Benedict Cumberbatch was 28 he met theater director Sophie Hunter at the Hay Festival who is now his wife with whom he has three children named Christopher Carlton Cumberbatch born in June 2015, Hal Auden Cumberbatch born in April 2017, and Finn Cumberbatch born in 2019.

Benedict Cumberbatch always tries to give back by providing funds for charities such as The Royal National Institution for the Blind, The Tigger Foundation, Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, Oxfam, etc.

Career

Acted in Royal National Theaters

In 2005 Benedict Cumberbatch starred in the Royal National Theater on Stage in the play “After the Dance” as well as “The Last of the Haussmans”. In 2008 he starred in a play called “Hitchcock Blonde”, and then later he played Prince Hal in Henry IV and Henry V.

Cumberbatch also starred in The Taming of The Shrew and more.

After the Dance In 2005, Benedict Cumberbatch had a starring role in the play “After the Dance” which is a two-part play. The first part was called “What You Will” and the second part “As You Like It”. He played Lucentio in “What You Will”, and Orlando in “As You Like It”.

The Last of the Haussmann

In 2006, Benedict Cumberbatch starred in the National Theater Company’s production of The Last of The Haussmans. He portrayed Andre Michel in this play which was about a Jewish family who moved from Paris to England but ends up adjusting to their new surroundings.

It is believed that this is what started Benedict Cumberbatch’s amazing acting career.

Started career in Television

In addition to his success at the Royal National Theatre, Benedict Cumberbatch decided to take a different path and try acting in television. He starred in a TV series called “Fortysomething” which aired on the BBC. In this series, he portrayed Benidict Black who is an antique shop owner and has a wife named Jane (played by Elizabeth McGovern).

Benedict Cumberbatch also hosted Saturday Night Live in late October 2012 despite being an invited guest. The episode was noted as one of the better episodes of SNL throughout recent years with guests including Kristen Wiig, Jim Carrey, Taylor Swift, Mick Jagger, Adam Sandler, and Paul McCartney to mention a few.

In Hawking

In the TV series Hawking which was aired in 2004, he played Stephen Hawking. This was a television movie which was based on the life of Stephen Hawking who is a theoretical physicist.

As Sherlock Holmes

In 2010, Benedict Cumberbatch appeared in the BBC’s Sherlock series in the role of Sherlock Holmes. He went on to be ranked as #1 most searched actor in the UK by Google, and #5 most searched actors in Australia by Google. This led him to win numerous awards including British Academy Television Award for Best Actor and The BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor.
